Tutoring English to my indigenous students last week was a blast! We conquered our fears of listening, speaking and writing English. After seven days of dutiful lectures and exercises in the morning, homework in the evenings, they all emerged more confident to battle English, all for the mission of protecting their tribal cultural land and heritage. These students are truly modern day warriors that pledge allegiance to their culture that is truly foundation of this country's heritage. The next time they'd see a poster, an ad, official barangay documents written in English, I am confident that they will have the courage and tools to decifer its meaning and discern its content to protect their tribes' cultural interests. It is a long and hard struggle but this photo shows that hope lives among the Mangyan youth.
